Mets' Francisco Alvarez Suffers Small Left Pinky Fracture During Triple-A Rehab

The Mets plan to pause his rehab for two to three days to let swelling ease, leaving his return date uncertain given his run of hand injuries.

Overview

  • Manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed Alvarez was hit by a pitch in his first rehab game for Triple-A Syracuse and sustained a small fracture in his left pinky.
  • Alvarez caught five innings, went 1-for-2 with a walk, and was lifted after the HBP on his receiving hand.
  • He had just begun rehabbing a right-thumb UCL sprain suffered on Aug. 17, an injury that doctors say will eventually require surgery with an estimated eight-week recovery if done in-season.
  • Mendoza said the club will wait two to three days for inflammation to subside before resuming baseball activities, noting Alvarez was throwing at Citi Field and was set to see doctors.
  • The setback extends a two-year stretch of hand injuries for Alvarez, including left hamate surgery this spring and right-thumb ligament surgery last season, as the Mets continue with Luis Torrens and Hayden Senger at catcher.
