MetsClay Holmes Suffers Fractured Fibula After 111 MPH Comebacker

The loss strains an injury-hit Mets roster, forcing urgent choices for the rotation.

Overview

  • X-rays late Friday confirmed a fractured right fibula, and manager Carlos Mendoza said Holmes will be out “for a long time.”
  • The break came on a 111.1 mph comebacker off the bat of Yankees rookie Spencer Jones in the fourth inning, and Holmes stayed in to face seven more hitters before exiting in the fifth.
  • Holmes had been the Mets’ most reliable starter, entering the night with a 1.86 ERA and now at 2.39 after allowing four runs in a 5-2 loss.
  • New York must replace his turn in a rotation already stretched by injuries to regulars including Francisco Lindor, Francisco Alvarez, Jorge Polanco and Luis Robert Jr.
  • Jones expressed remorse after learning the diagnosis and said Holmes is a friend he trains with in Nashville.
