• Alvarez was activated Friday in Cincinnati after a five-game rehab at Triple-A Syracuse and is available for the series opener against the Reds.
• He sprained the UCL in his right thumb on Aug. 17 and fractured his left pinky during rehab, received medical clearance, and postponed thumb surgery until the offseason.
• During rehab he went 4-for-19 with eight strikeouts and hit a grand slam, and he has adjusted his throws with limited thumb use.
• Alvarez said his throwing feels unstable but not painful, and club officials anticipate opponents will test his arm on the bases.
• In a corresponding move the Mets optioned catcher Hayden Senger to Triple-A, with Luis Torrens having produced well in Alvarez’s 11-game absence and the series carrying Wild Card implications.
