Metro’s Canine Transfer Center Exceeds Capacity on Eighth Anniversary

A resource strain on day-to-day operations has prompted a public appeal for adoptions after the shelter population rose to 44 dogs.

Overview

  • The shelter’s population climbed to 44 dogs, surpassing its intended capacity and stretching available resources.
  • The Metro transport authority has urged Mexico City residents to adopt available dogs or donate food and other supplies to ease maintenance demands.
  • Employees of a beverage company recently delivered an in-kind donation of dog food and volunteered time to walk the shelter’s residents.
  • Since opening in July 2017, the center has taken in 632 stray or lost dogs and facilitated 588 returns to homes through adoptions and owner reunifications.
  • All dogs at the facility receive daily meals, veterinary care, vaccinations, deworming and sterilization at no cost to adopters or owners.
