The exhibition aims to reanimate historical and contemporary garments from the museum's massive 33,000-item fashion archive, focusing on 250 pieces that are too fragile to be worn again - referred to as 'Sleeping Beauties'.
The exhibits will explore the sensory experiences of fashion and themes of nature and regeneration, integrating groundbreaking technology like AI and CGI for an immersive experience.
Fashion pieces will span 400 years, featuring works by esteemed designers like Phillip Lim, Stella McCartney, Elsa Schiaparelli, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, and Hubert de Givenchy.
The display will be organized into three zones - Land, Sea, and Sky, symbolizing fashion's ever-changing relationship to the natural world, and emphasizing the contemporary focus on sustainability.
The Met Gala red carpet kick-off event, a major fundraiser for the Costume Institute, is scheduled for May 6, 2024, with the exhibition running from May 10 to September 2, 2024.
