Metrolink Ashton Line Reopens After BMW Removed From Tracks Near New Islington

Trams are running again with severe delays following the car's removal.

Overview

  • Services between Piccadilly and Ashton-under-Lyne were suspended earlier after a BMW became stuck near New Islington on the descent toward the Piccadilly tunnel.
  • Shortly after midday, TfGM confirmed the vehicle was removed and trams restarted, with knock-on disruption continuing across the line.
  • During the suspension, tram tickets were accepted on Bee Network bus routes including the 7, 53, 76, 76A, 171, 172, 216, 219, 220, 221, 230 and 231.
  • An eyewitness, councillor Alan Good, reported seeing the BMW drive onto the tracks and said it would require towing to be moved.
  • It was reported the car appeared abandoned with occupants leaving on foot, and Greater Manchester Police were notified as Metrolink crews worked to clear the scene.
