MetroCard Era Ends Jan. 1 as MTA Shifts NYC Transit to OMNY

The contactless system introduces per-ride fares with a weekly cap in place of the discontinued monthly pass.

Overview

  • Existing MetroCards will no longer be reloadable on Jan. 1 and can be used for up to six months during the transition.
  • Riders will pay by tapping a phone, contactless credit or debit card, or a physical OMNY card at subway turnstiles and on buses.
  • Single rides cost $2.90 today and rise to $3.00 on Jan. 4, with two-hour free transfers between subway and bus.
  • OMNY fare capping grants free trips after 12 paid rides in seven days using the same payment method, with a $34 weekly ceiling.
  • A $5 OMNY card is available from machines in 472 stations, and the MTA says OMNY already accounts for roughly 90% of daily trips.
