Metro Vancouver Parks Workers Walk Off Job Indefinitely

Union says stalled talks over safety, contracting out and recruitment prompted the walkout.

Overview

  • More than 100 outside parks workers stopped work on Sunday, July 5, and the union says the walkout is indefinite.
  • The Greater Vancouver Regional District Employees’ Union represents about 700 outside workers who have been without a new collective agreement for roughly 18 months.
  • The Labour Relations Board designated 15 employees as essential to keep a skeletal presence in 25 regional parks, but routine tasks such as trail repairs, garbage pickup and immediate first aid are reduced.
  • Metro Vancouver says parks remain open, calls its offer competitive and says it has proposed a wage increase of more than 10% over three years while remaining ready for mediated talks.
  • Union leaders list health and safety, contracting out and recruitment and retention as core bargaining issues and warn that a full-scale, all‑out strike of regional services members is possible if talks do not advance.
