Meteosat-13 Enters Service to Spot Storms Before Clouds Form

EUMETSAT has begun routine data delivery from the satellite to national weather services to give forecasters earlier, multilayer views of the atmosphere for faster warnings.

Overview

  • EUMETSAT declared Meteosat-13 operational on October 13, 2026 and began supplying its Infra‑Sounder measurements to member-state weather services.
  • The satellite’s Infra‑Sounder measures temperature and humidity in nearly 2,000 infrared channels to produce vertical profiles that reveal atmospheric instability before clouds appear.
  • Meteosat-13 images Europe from geostationary orbit every 30 minutes and, when combined with other MTG instruments, creates a 4D picture that shows evolving winds, lightning and storm structure.
  • EUMETSAT and partners are training AI systems to ingest the new data and produce very-short-term forecasting updates in about eleven minutes to help emergency services gain earlier lead time for evacuations.
  • Beyond storms, the satellite can track ozone, dust, volcanic ash and wildfire smoke columns, which improves monitoring of air quality and how particles may seed or change storm development.
