Meteorological Agencies Warn of Severe Storms in Argentina and Winter Hazards in Spain

Officials outline specific hazards and precautions as storm risk intensifies in northern Argentina and mountain snow and fog affect parts of Spain.

Overview

  • Argentina’s national weather service (SMN) keeps orange alerts in parts of Corrientes, Chaco, Santiago del Estero, Salta (center), Tucumán and eastern Catamarca, warning of storms with 80–120 mm of rain, frequent lightning, hail and wind gusts over 90 km/h.
  • Yellow alerts extend across broader areas including Buenos Aires province (north), Entre Ríos (south), Santa Fe (north and south), Córdoba (southeast and north), Corrientes, Misiones, Formosa, Chaco (northwest), Santiago del Estero (southeast), Salta (east and west), Jujuy, Catamarca (center), La Rioja, San Juan and northwest San Luis.
  • SMN safety guidance for higher-risk zones urges staying indoors, securing loose objects, avoiding flooded streets, disconnecting appliances if water enters and following local emergency instructions.
  • In Buenos Aires City and the surrounding metro area, temperatures dropped with isolated morning storms possible, turning windier by midday and partly cloudy later, while stronger activity remains focused in orange-alert provinces.
  • In Spain, residents reported light snow in several Madrid neighborhoods on Jan. 17 as AEMET advised caution for snowfall above roughly 800 meters in the sierra and recommended chains or winter tyres on mountain routes, with Galicia expecting morning fog and little precipitation on Jan. 18.
