Metal: Hellsinger Studio The Outsiders Closes as Funcom Layoffs Hit

Funcom attributes the cuts to a move from launch development to live-service support for Dune: Awakening.

Overview

  • Founder David Goldfarb announced on social media that the 10-year-old Stockholm team, also known as Funcom Stockholm, is shutting down.
  • Goldfarb asked for business leads and placement help for affected employees and said the team will try to continue in some new form.
  • Funcom confirmed layoffs last week after calling Dune: Awakening the biggest release in its history and said ongoing support requires fewer developers.
  • The number of jobs lost was not disclosed, with reports placing the studio’s size between at least 30 and about 60 staff.
  • The Outsiders was acquired by Funcom in 2021; the studio previously survived the cancellation of Darkborn and went on to release the well-received Metal: Hellsinger in 2022.
