Meta Will Use AI Chat Interactions to Personalize Feeds and Ads Starting December 16

The update folds chatbot conversations into Meta’s ad-targeting system, raising fresh privacy concerns from experts.

Overview

  • Users will be notified on October 7, the change takes effect on December 16, and there is no opt-out for people who use Meta AI.
  • Voice and text exchanges with Meta AI will be added to existing signals to shape posts, Reels, groups and advertising across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger.
  • Cross-app use via Accounts Center means a chat in one service can influence recommendations in another, and the treatment of encrypted conversations does not change.
  • The rollout begins in most regions but excludes the European Union, the United Kingdom and South Korea at launch.
  • Meta says conversations about sensitive topics will not be used for ads and it has no plans to place ads inside chat, as Meta AI usage exceeds 1 billion monthly users.
