Meta to Use AI Chats to Personalize Facebook and Instagram Content and Ads Starting Dec. 16

Users who engage with Meta AI cannot opt out, with the EU, UK and South Korea excluded at launch.

Overview

  • Meta will begin notifying people on October 7, and the update applies only to interactions after December 16 rather than past conversations.
  • Text and voice exchanges with Meta AI across products, including signals from Ray‑Ban Meta smart glasses, will feed into recommendations alongside existing activity when accounts are linked in Accounts Center.
  • Conversations about sensitive topics such as religion, politics, health, sexual orientation or race will not be used for ad targeting, and users can still adjust what they see via Ads Preferences and feed controls.
  • Meta AI has more than 1 billion monthly users, and the company says it is still building the systems that will use these signals with no immediate plans to place ads inside AI products.
  • WhatsApp interactions will influence other apps only if the WhatsApp account is linked, and Meta says it aims to expand to the EU, UK and South Korea after regulatory engagement.
