Meta to Use AI Chat Interactions to Personalize Facebook and Instagram Ads Starting Dec. 16

The update folds text and voice signals from Meta AI into recommendation models across apps to deepen ad relevance.

Overview

  • User notifications begin October 7, and the change applies automatically to anyone who uses Meta AI with no opt-out.
  • The rollout starts in most regions on December 16, initially excluding the European Union, United Kingdom and South Korea as Meta consults regulators.
  • Signals will include chats and voice interactions, including those from Ray-Ban Meta glasses, informing feeds and ads across linked accounts in Accounts Center.
  • Interactions on WhatsApp will be used only if the WhatsApp account is linked to other Meta apps, and conversations before December 16 will not be used.
  • Meta says conversations about sensitive topics such as religion, politics, health or sexual orientation will not be used for ad targeting, and Meta AI now exceeds 1 billion monthly users.
