Meta to Shut Down Messenger Desktop Apps on Dec. 15, 2025

Users will transition to web-based Messenger with steps to keep chat history intact.

Overview

  • Meta confirmed the standalone Mac and Windows apps will stop accepting logins and be retired, with users moved to the web experience.
  • An in-app alert will kick off deprecation, and Mac users will have 60 days from that notice before the app is blocked.
  • After the cutoff, users are automatically redirected to Facebook.com, or to Messenger.com for accounts not linked to Facebook.
  • Meta advises turning on secure storage and setting a PIN in the desktop app to preserve conversations across platforms.
  • Windows users can shift to the Facebook desktop app, both platforms can use Messenger in a browser, and Meta has not given a public reason for the change, which follows its 2024 move to a PWA.
