Meta to Add Parental Supervision to Teen AI Chats on Instagram

The move follows reports of inappropriate chats with minors under regulatory scrutiny.

Overview

  • Parents will be able to disable one-on-one chats with AI characters entirely or block specific characters.
  • Meta’s general-purpose Meta AI assistant will remain available to teens with default age-appropriate protections.
  • Parents will receive high-level topic summaries about teens’ AI conversations, not full chat transcripts.
  • The controls will begin rolling out early next year on Instagram in English in the U.S., U.K., Canada and Australia.
  • The update builds on PG-13-style content limits and restricted character access as regulators, including the FTC, examine chatbot safety.
