Meta Tests Humanoid Robot Prototypes With Chinese Partner

Meta says the work is internal research to explore giving its Muse AI a physical body, with regulatory limits and component shortages set to shape any next steps.

Overview

  • Multiple reports say Meta partnered with Shanghai-based Fourier to build a humanoid prototype called Max that stands about five feet tall, weighs roughly 48 kilograms, has five-fingered hands, chest speakers and a face display that mimics expressions.
  • Max is reported to run on Nvidia’s Jetson Thor computing platform and can recognize voices, interpret simple gestures and pick up small objects using its five-fingered hands.
  • Work on a follow-up prototype called Max 2 began in September and is intended to add improved manipulation, a projector for visual output and extra sensors to help the robot climb stairs.
  • Meta describes the collaboration as research and says it has no plans to sell the current units, while the company’s May 2026 purchase of Assured Robot Intelligence feeds its broader effort to bring Muse into the physical world.
  • U.S. regulatory actions and supply-chain concerns, including a July 2026 FCC restriction on imports of new Chinese humanoid models, could limit cross-border testing, component sourcing and any future commercial rollout.
