Meta Sets Final OS Update for Quest 2 and Quest Pro, Signaling Platform Shift

Meta says hardware limits mean future features will target Quest 3/3S and the forthcoming Meta VR Glasses as the new platform baseline.

Overview

  • Meta disclosed Monday that version v213 will be the last feature OS release for Quest 2 and Quest Pro and is scheduled to ship by March 2027.
  • The company will keep shipping security patches and critical bug fixes only through December 2027 and will accept new app submissions for those headsets until December 2027.
  • Meta will not test future OS or SDK releases on Quest 2 and Quest Pro, leaving developers responsible for backward-compatibility testing and for deciding whether to split releases by headset generation.
  • Meta says store access, multiplayer, cross-play and users' existing purchases will remain available, but apps that rely on post-March 2027 OS features cannot be backported to older headsets.
  • The move follows the Quest 2’s long life as Meta’s best-selling headset and prepares the platform for Quest 3/3S and the expected Meta VR Glasses launch in spring 2027, which Meta calls the new development baseline.
