Meta Sets Final OS Update for Quest 2 and Quest Pro, Ending New Feature Work by March 2027

The company says it will shift engineering to Quest 3/3S and to a new Meta VR Glasses product as older Quest hardware reaches its limits.

Overview

  • Meta announced on Monday that the last full operating system release for Quest 2 and Quest Pro will be version v213 and is due by March 2027.
  • After v213, Meta will keep delivering security patches and critical bug fixes through December 31, 2027, and will accept new app submissions for those devices through December 2027.
  • Meta says it will not remove cross-play or block Quest 2 players and requires developers to give six months’ notice before ending support for a game so players can prepare.
  • The company frames the move as a shift to newer hardware because the Quest 2’s older mobile chipset limits new features, and Meta has named Quest 3/3S its new baseline while preparing Meta VR Glasses for spring 2027.
  • The change affects roughly 20 million Quest 2 owners and developers who will have a narrowing window to add features or migrate apps, and reported Glasses details include a $1,299 price, a next‑generation chipset, and higher‑resolution AMOLED displays.
