Meta Removes Thousands of Fake Accounts Linked to China-Based Operations

The accounts, posing as American citizens and others, were part of a covert influence campaign targeting U.S. and international social media users.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has removed thousands of fake accounts linked to China-based operations that were attempting to influence social media users in the U.S. and elsewhere.
The removed accounts were part of three different covert influence operations, two linked to China and one to Russia.
One China-based network included 4,789 fake Facebook accounts that were designed to appear as American citizens, posting about U.S. politics and China-U.S. relations.
Another Chinese network targeted India and the Tibet region, with accounts posing as lawyers, human-rights activists, and journalists.
Meta's actions come at a sensitive time in the international information space, with the U.S. State Department raising concerns about China's 'global information manipulation.'
