Overview

  • Meta will split its AI division into two units: a consumer-focused AI Products team led by Connor Hayes and an AGI Foundations team co-headed by Ahmad Al-Dahle and Amir Frenkel.
  • The AI Products team will develop Meta’s AI assistant and embed smart features across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and its standalone AI Studio app.
  • The AGI Foundations unit will advance research on Meta’s Llama models and enhance core capabilities in reasoning, multimedia processing and voice.
  • Meta retained its FAIR research unit outside the new structure, allowing core AI research to continue uninterrupted alongside staff reallocated into the AI Products and AGI Foundations teams.
  • Meta faces competition from Google and OpenAI, is ramping up data center and Nvidia hardware investments and has seen several top AI researchers depart for rival firms.
