Meta Opens Muse to Hardware Builders and Offers 5,000 Home Link Units

The company says the open-source gadget platform will make Muse a persistent, in-home agent and create new revenue from subscriptions and transaction fees.

Overview

  • Meta announced on Oct. 2 that it open-sourced Muse Gadgets firmware and a Linux device SDK under the Apache 2.0 license so hobbyists and developers can build custom devices using ESP32 boards or Linux hardware like Raspberry Pi.
  • The company published developer access tools including API tokens, a GitHub repo, and a Discord community to seed third-party projects and examples for displays, HDMI sticks, and smart‑home integrations.
  • Meta manufactured 5,000 Muse Home Link units and is offering them to Muse subscribers via a waitlist with shipping planned in the coming weeks, positioning the Home Link as a bridge between Muse and local smart devices.
  • Muse already supports agentic shopping through retail connectors and multiple payment rails such as Stripe Link and Shop Pay, and Meta says it will take small transaction fees, though Amazon has blocked Muse from purchasing on its site.
  • The push to hardware and commerce could accelerate consumer uptake but raises fresh concerns since independent validation of Meta’s claimed Secure VM protections and Muse Spark research contributions is limited and retailers and security researchers have raised privacy and vulnerability questions.
