Meta Launches Muse Image With Default Access to Public Instagram Content

Default use of public Instagram posts lets Muse Image create remixes without notifying creators, prompting privacy and transparency concerns.

Overview

  • Meta announced Muse Image on Wednesday and has begun rolling it out through Meta AI/meta.ai, Instagram Story effects in the U.S., and in some WhatsApp regions while wider platform and country launches are planned.
  • The model can edit photos, synthesize images from multiple reference photos or text, render text reliably, query the web and use coding tools such as QR-code generation, and it applies agentic self‑optimization to improve outputs.
  • By default Muse Image may draw on images from public Instagram profiles, including via @-mentions, but Instagram now offers toggles under “Sharing and reusing” and the option to switch accounts to private to stop future use.
  • Privacy advocates and outlets note that account owners are not notified when public posts are used and that making an account private may not remove AI images already generated from previously public content.
  • Muse Image was built by Meta’s Superintelligence Labs as part of a push toward larger AI goals, Meta has previewed a Muse Video tool, and the rollout raises questions about misuse and content policy enforcement given past problems at other AI platforms.
