Meta Faces Scrutiny Over Crypto-Related Trademark Filings

Rep. Maxine Waters has sent a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressing concern over the company's recent trademark filings related to digital asset services and blockchains.
Waters, the top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, believes these trademarks indicate Meta's intention to expand its involvement in the digital assets ecosystem.
Waters has asked whether Meta plans to launch a payments platform supporting cryptocurrencies and how Meta’s technology is enabling cryptocurrency creation, mining, storage, transmission, or settlement.
Despite Meta's previous statement in October 2023 that it had no active digital asset projects, Waters believes the new trademark applications suggest otherwise.
Meta must respond to the first Notice of Allowance (NOA) issued in August 2023 by February 15, and to the most recent NOA – sent in January – by July 16.
