Meta AI Launches in the EU After Year-Long Regulatory Delay

The text-only AI assistant, compliant with EU regulations, will progressively roll out in 41 countries and 21 territories, aiming to reach over one billion users globally by year-end.

Meta AI, first launched in the U.S. in September 2023, is now available in the EU as of March 20, 2025, across Meta platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp.
The EU version of Meta AI is text-only and does not include image generation, a feature available in non-EU regions, to comply with local regulatory requirements.
Meta AI has not been trained on European user data, aligning with the EU's strict data protection laws, including GDPR.
The rollout will occur gradually across 41 European countries and 21 overseas territories, with availability in six languages.
Meta has invested $60-65 billion in AI infrastructure for 2025 and aims to grow Meta AI's user base from 700 million to over one billion globally by the end of the year.
