Met Submits Grenfell Investigation Files to CPS

Prosecutors have been asked to weigh offences from manslaughter to fraud, with charging decisions due before the fire’s tenth anniversary.

Overview

  • Detectives submitted 20 evidence files on Sept 30, 2026 covering 20 organisations and 54 individuals and asked the Crown Prosecution Service to consider charges including corporate manslaughter, gross negligence manslaughter, health-and-safety offences, fraud and misconduct in public office.
  • The Metropolitan Police say the referral is the result of a vast inquiry led by a 220-strong team that produced summary reports exceeding four million words and reviewed more than 45,000 documents, some 165 million electronic files and roughly 14,700 witness statements.
  • Investigators compiled 14 additional overarching evidence files and more than 27,000 exhibits such as cladding, insulation, doors and fixtures to show how the 2017 blaze reached the roof within 30 minutes after an electrical fault spread via highly combustible ACM cladding and plastic insulation.
  • The Met says it will work with criminal justice partners to support bereaved families and survivors as the CPS studies the files and has pledged to reach charging decisions before the 10th anniversary of the fire on 14 June 2027.
  • Beyond potential prosecutions, the referral could shape accountability for firms and public bodies responsible for building refurbishment and fire safety and may influence future enforcement, regulation and compensation for those affected.
