Met Police Renew Cold-Case Appeal in 1995 Joy Hewer Murder With £20,000 Reward

Detectives are re-examining a preserved DNA profile with modern techniques to generate new leads.

Overview

  • Officers reissued a CCTV image of a man seen entering St David’s Court around 10:30pm on 17 October 1995, described at the time as white, in his 30s, with short hair and a light-coloured jacket.
  • Police are still trying to identify a male who phoned 999 from a Fulbourne Road phone box at 11:18pm to report smoke, as well as a person he spoke to who was waiting in a nearby bus queue.
  • Investigators say there were no signs of forced entry to the sixth-floor flat, indicating Ms Hewer likely knew her attacker.
  • Firefighters found Ms Hewer’s body after extinguishing two deliberately set fires; a post-mortem recorded multiple stab wounds and evidence of sexual assault.
  • Ms Hewer’s sister, Penny Barnes, issued a fresh public appeal for information, urging anyone with even small details to contact the Met or Crimestoppers.
