Met Police Officer's Assault Conviction Overturned After Bus Fare Arrest Incident

PC Perry Lathwood had his conviction quashed, but remains on restricted duties pending a misconduct review.

PC Perry Lathwood was initially fined £1,500 for assaulting a woman during a bus fare arrest in Croydon in June 2023.
The incident, which was captured on video and widely shared online, showed Lathwood grabbing Jocelyn Agyemang by the arm, causing bruising.
Ms. Agyemang was de-arrested after it was confirmed she had paid for her bus fare, and the trial judge noted Lathwood made a 'momentary error of judgment.'
On appeal, Southwark Crown Court quashed the conviction, but Lathwood remains on restricted duties as a misconduct process is ongoing.
Assistant Commissioner Louisa Rolfe acknowledged the incident's significant impact, particularly on Black communities, and emphasized the need for police accountability.
