Met Police Officer Found Guilty of Assaulting Shopkeeper in Mistaken Identity Case

Officer Jonathan Marsh, who punched a shopkeeper he mistook for a vandal, will face sentencing on February 29 and an internal misconduct process.

Metropolitan Police officer Jonathan Marsh was found guilty of common assault after mistakenly identifying a shopkeeper as a vandal and punching him.
The shopkeeper had initially called the police to report someone damaging his shop sign.
The incident occurred in November 2022, and Marsh will be sentenced on February 29, 2024.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigated the case, stating there was no justification for Marsh's use of force.
Marsh remains on restricted duties and will now face an internal misconduct process within the Met Police.
