Met Police Officer Faces Criminal Charges for Allegedly Stealing from Dead Cyclist
The Metropolitan Police has launched an investigation into an officer accused of stealing £170 from a deceased cyclist's wallet in North London.
- An officer is accused of stealing money from Claudio Gaetani, a 45-year-old cyclist who died from a heart attack.
- Gaetani's body was left on a busy street for six hours, in view of children, while police waited for an undertaker.
- More than €200 (£170) was missing from Gaetani's wallet when his belongings were collected from the police station.
- CCTV allegedly shows an officer counting money at the scene; the case has been referred to the Crown Prosecution Service.
- The incident adds to a series of reputationally damaging scandals for the Metropolitan Police.
