Met Police Impounds 72 Supercars Worth £7m in Uninsured Driving Sting

A weekend sting using ANPR alongside insurer databases to curb dangerous driving will transition into ongoing enforcement paired with public-education campaigns.

Overview

  • Approximately 75 officers from the Metropolitan Police’s Special Constabulary and Vehicle Enforcement Team used ANPR cameras, predictive tracking and insurer data to identify non-compliant vehicles.
  • Officers impounded around 72 high-end cars valued at an estimated £6–7 million after finding many uninsured or inadequately covered, including two air-freighted Lamborghinis driven within minutes of arrival.
  • The operation uncovered wider offences leading to eight arrests for crimes such as actual bodily harm, criminal damage, drug offences, stolen vehicles, immigration breaches and insurance fraud.
  • Numerous motoring offences were recorded with tickets for driving without a valid licence or MOT, mobile phone use at the wheel, illegal window tints, seatbelt violations and unsafe vehicle conditions.
  • The Metropolitan Police and Motor Insurers’ Bureau plan to maintain targeted patrols in seasonal hotspots while rolling out public-education campaigns on insurance obligations.
