Met Police Faces Oversight in Handling of Mohamed Al Fayed Allegations

The police watchdog will oversee an investigation into potential failures in addressing sexual abuse claims against the late Harrods owner.

  • The Metropolitan Police will investigate its handling of two 2008 complaints against Mohamed Al Fayed under the supervision of the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
  • More than 100 alleged victims, including minors, have reported sexual abuse by Al Fayed, with accusations spanning from 1977 to 2014.
  • The Met is reviewing 21 allegations made before Al Fayed's death in 2023, with some cases previously referred to prosecutors but never resulting in charges.
  • The investigation will also examine claims of police corruption, including allegations that officers accepted bribes to shield Al Fayed from scrutiny.
  • Advocates and legal representatives are calling for a statutory public inquiry to ensure transparency and accountability in addressing systemic failures.
