Met Police Chief Calls Live Facial Recognition a Game-Changer After Over 700 Arrests in 2025

He set out a wider technology push that includes a drone pilot later this year.

Overview

  • At Notting Hill Carnival, the Met says LFR led to 61 arrests, including 16 for serious violence and 13 related to violence against women and girls.
  • Rowley credited the deployments with one of the safest Carnivals in years, citing year-on-year falls of 70% in robbery, 53% in violence and 8% in sexual offences.
  • The year-to-date arrests attributed to LFR include 50 registered sex offenders alleged to be in breach of their conditions.
  • The force plans to test deploying drones alongside officers to support searches, traffic incident response and large public events.
  • Eleven civil-liberty and anti-racist groups have opposed the deployments as mass surveillance with lower accuracy for women and people of colour, while Rowley said the Met chose its algorithm with care.
