Met Opens Murder Inquiry After Man, 43, Dies Days After Southwark Altercation

Prosecutors are reviewing the initial GBH and ABH charges following the victim’s death.

  • Michael John Edwards, 43, of Nuneaton, died in hospital on 17 September after being critically injured in Southwark on 13 September.
  • Officers were called at about 2:55am to reports of an altercation, and the London Ambulance Service took the victim to a central London hospital.
  • Lewis Macleod, 36, of Hadleigh Road, Sunderland, was charged on 15 September with grievous bodily harm and actual bodily harm.
  • He appeared at Croydon Magistrates’ Court and was remanded in custody while the Crown Prosecution Service reviews the case.
  • Detective Inspector Andy Griffin is leading the investigation, and specialist officers are supporting Mr Edwards’ family.
