Met Officer Dismissed for Undeclared Spray-Tanning Business During Home-Working

The misconduct panel said Jennifer Stowers' dishonesty over an undeclared side business harmed public confidence.

Overview

  • A Sutton hearing chaired by Commander Katie Lilburn found breaches of discreditable conduct, honesty and integrity, and duties and responsibilities, leading to dismissal without notice.
  • Investigators cited an Instagram account active from May 18, 2023 to April 2, 2025 that advertised mobile spray-tan visits, amassed over 5,500 followers, and showcased a 2024 GB Beauty award.
  • Stowers told her line manager on November 23, 2023 she could not attend the office due to mental health issues, was referred to occupational health, and was permitted to work from home.
  • In a June 4, 2025 interview she admitted she may have tanned clients during regular breaks while on duty, then told the hearing she did not work on clients in work hours and that posts were scheduled.
  • She described the activity as a hobby, said she paid for the award and used a follower ‘loop,’ and did not register the business with the Met, which the panel ruled breached force rules and damaged trust.
