Met Officer Acquitted in 2022 Taser Case That Left Man With Life-Changing Injury

The force says it will liaise with the IOPC on potential misconduct proceedings now that the criminal trial has concluded.

Overview

  • PC Liam Newman, 31, was found not guilty of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm at Southwark Crown Court on 13 January 2026.
  • The case stemmed from a 24 April 2022 incident in Woodford Green in which 61-year-old Leonard Sandiford fell from an outbuilding after being Tasered and suffered a catastrophic spinal injury.
  • Newman was charged following an IOPC investigation and had pleaded not guilty on 20 November 2024.
  • Jurors saw body-worn video; prosecutors said the Taser was used to stop an escape, while the defence said Newman feared serious harm and a possible weapon.
  • The Metropolitan Police expressed regret for the injuries, noted Newman has been on restricted duties, and said it will continue reviewing Taser use and training.
