Met Office Widens Snow and Ice Alerts as Arctic Cold Tightens Grip on UK

Health authorities have issued an amber cold-health alert for England through 9 January, warning of severe pressure on care services.

Overview

  • Amber snow warnings remain in force for northern and eastern Scotland on Saturday, with 10–20cm possible at lower levels and up to 40cm on higher ground, plus a risk of blizzards.
  • Yellow warnings for snow and ice now cover large areas into Monday, including Northern Ireland, parts of England, and new alerts for Wales and the Midlands from Sunday into Monday with 1–3cm widely and up to 5–8cm in places.
  • North Wales also faces a fresh 20-hour ice warning from Saturday afternoon into Sunday, with forecasters cautioning on hazardous surfaces and travel disruption.
  • Transport continues to be affected, with at least 10 flights cancelled or delayed at Aberdeen and a Widerøe service from Bergen forced to return, as airlines report weather-related delays and airports keep clearing operations underway.
  • Forecasters expect daytime temperatures to hover in low single digits with sub-zero nights, raising the risk of power cuts, stranded vehicles and isolated communities, and officials urge people to check journeys and prepare for icy conditions.
