Met Office Widens Snow and Ice Alerts Across UK, Extends North East Warning to Tuesday

Rail and road disruption in northern Scotland highlights the strain on services under an amber cold-health alert.

Overview

  • Yellow warnings now cover large parts of the UK with expanded coverage into the Midlands, including Birmingham, Coventry, Nottingham and Leicester, and a brought‑forward start time for Merseyside as snow arrived earlier than forecast.
  • The Met Office has extended the North East snow and ice warning to 11am on Tuesday, with scattered snow showers and icy patches expected to disrupt travel into Tuesday morning.
  • Forecasters expect 1–3 cm of snow in many places by Monday morning, with 5–8 cm possible in inland and higher parts of Wales, and heavier falls in northern Scotland where amber alerts indicate 10–30 cm or more on higher ground with drifting and blizzard risk.
  • Transport disruption continues in northern Scotland, with ScotRail cancellations, LNER reporting major disruption north of Dundee, around 20 cm on some rail lines, and road closures including severe delays on the A90.
  • The UKHSA’s amber cold-health alert remains in force across much of England until January 9, with temperatures widely below freezing and advice to plan journeys carefully and carry winter essentials if driving.
