Met Office Upgrades Storm Amy Warnings to Amber in Scotland as 95mph Gusts Forecast

Agencies urge final preparations for flooding, power cuts, travel disruption and coastal hazards from Friday night into Saturday.

Overview

  • An amber wind warning has been issued for parts of Scotland, covering Grampian, Highlands and Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland, and Strathclyde from 5pm Friday to 9am Saturday, with forecasters citing a danger to life from flying debris.
  • Gusts are expected to reach 60–70 mph widely, 70–80 mph in places and possibly exceed 95 mph in the most exposed locations, alongside very rough coastal conditions.
  • Yellow wind alerts span much of Scotland, northern England and Wales from 3pm Friday to midnight Saturday, with Northern Ireland under a separate wind warning from Friday afternoon into Saturday morning.
  • Heavy rain will focus on western Scotland with 30–50 mm possible in 6–9 hours on Friday and higher totals over west-facing mountains, raising the risk of flooding and transport disruption.
  • The Met Office, Transport Scotland and the RAC advise checking rail, road, ferry and flight updates, avoiding non‑essential travel in worst‑affected areas, securing outdoor items and preparing emergency kits in case of power cuts.
