Met Office Unveils 21 Storm Names for 2025–26 Season

Officials say clear naming improves public response to severe weather, citing surveys after Storm Floris that found high alert awareness and protective action.

Overview

  • The UK Met Office, Met Éireann and the NetherlandsKNMI released the new North Atlantic list drawn from more than 50,000 public submissions.
  • Amy, Bram and Chandra are first in line for use when a system is forecast to bring medium or high impacts in the UK, Ireland or the Netherlands.
  • Names are vetted for pronunciation and cross-border meaning, run alphabetically from September to August, and omit Q, U, X, Y and Z.
  • Met Office surveys after Storm Floris reported 93% awareness of amber warnings in affected areas and 83% of people taking preparatory action.
  • Meteorologists note a warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, making heavier rainfall and greater flood risk more likely during future storms.
