Met Office Names Storm Amy, Issues Yellow Warnings for 80mph Winds and Heavy Rain

Forecasters attribute the rapid deepening to a jet stream strengthened by remnants of recent Atlantic hurricanes.

Overview

  • Storm Amy is forecast to hit from Friday evening into Saturday across Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of north and north‑west England, with additional alerts extending into North Wales.
  • Gusts are expected to reach 50–60 mph widely inland with potential peaks of 70–80 mph, strongest over exposed coasts and hills.
  • Western Scotland remains under separate rain warnings, with 30–50 mm possible in 6–9 hours and much higher totals on west‑facing mountains, heightening flood and landslide risk.
  • The Met Office cautions about travel disruption, power cuts, damage to buildings and a risk of injury from flying debris and large waves.
  • Public agencies advise securing loose items, checking routes and timetables, and preparing flood and power‑cut kits as forecasts and warnings continue to be reviewed.
