Met Office Issues Yellow Warnings as ‘Storm Benjamin’ Nears With Heavy Rain and 75mph Gusts

Low confidence in the track means impacts may change at short notice.

Overview

  • Three yellow alerts are in place for Thursday: heavy rain across much of southern and eastern England and two wind warnings covering eastern England and parts of the South West and west Wales.
  • Forecasts indicate widespread gusts of 45–55mph with 65–75mph possible very locally near exposed coasts, alongside 20–50mm of rain with a few spots potentially higher.
  • Officials warn of flooding of a few homes and businesses, hazardous driving and public transport disruption, power cuts, and a small danger to life from large waves throwing debris onto coastal roads and properties.
  • Residents in affected areas are urged to prepare flood and power‑cut emergency kits, secure loose outdoor items, check travel plans, and consider delaying journeys if conditions worsen.
  • Named Storm Benjamin by Météo France, the system is expected to influence UK weather on Thursday, and the Met Office says warning areas and timings—such as the eastern wind alert from 9am to midnight—may be adjusted quickly.
