Met Office Issues Rain and Wind Warnings as 80mm Downpours, 75mph Gusts Threaten

Officials urge preparation as a slow-moving Atlantic low threatens local flooding, power cuts, and hazardous travel.

Overview

  • Yellow warnings for heavy rain run from Saturday morning into early Sunday across much of Wales, northern and western England and parts of Scotland, with a separate wind warning in force from mid‑afternoon into the early hours.
  • Forecasters expect 20–30mm of rain widely with 60–80mm possible in places, while gusts could reach 50–60mph inland and 65–75mph on exposed coasts such as the Bristol Channel and west Wales.
  • The Environment Agency and Natural Resources Wales have issued dozens of flood alerts and at least one flood warning, including at Keswick Campsite in the Lake District.
  • Authorities report disruption including flooded and blocked roads in parts of Wales and slower traffic on key routes, with local alerts expanded to areas such as Merseyside, the West Midlands, Teesside and the South West.
  • The Met Office and AA advise securing loose items, checking journeys, and preparing for possible outages, and forecasters say warnings could be updated if the heaviest rain targets urban or sensitive areas.
