Met Office Issues New Year Snow and Ice Warnings Across UK as Arctic Cold Bites

Warnings highlight hazardous travel plus increased health pressures during a prolonged Arctic cold snap.

Overview

  • A yellow snow and ice alert runs from midnight to noon on 2 January for a broad swathe of England and Wales, including London and the West Midlands.
  • Forecasts point to 1–5cm for many where snow falls, with 10–20cm above 200m and 30cm or more possible on the highest routes in northern Scotland under separate warnings from 1–2 January.
  • Additional yellow alerts cover Northern Ireland early on 2 January and parts of northern Scotland through 3–4 January, with further updates likely as conditions develop.
  • The Met Office warns of longer journey times and injuries on icy surfaces, while UKHSA has amber cold‑health alerts in several English regions into early January.
  • Deputy Chief Forecaster Mark Sidaway says the Arctic air is likely to keep the UK cold through at least the first week of January; separately, Cincinnati expects a brief New Year’s Eve snow of up to about an inch with slick spots.
