Met Office Issues Amber 'Danger to Life' Wind Warning for Storm Austen

Forecasters say a rapidly deepening Atlantic low will bring very strong gusts plus heavy rain that could cause widespread disruption in southern England.

Overview

  • The Met Office has put Cornwall, Devon, Plymouth and the Isles of Scilly under an amber wind warning on Friday that warns of gusts up to about 80mph on exposed headlands and dangerous coastal waves.
  • Yellow warnings cover much of England, Wales and parts of Scotland with inland gusts of roughly 45–70mph that forecasters say will probably cause travel disruption, fallen trees and short-term power cuts.
  • Buckinghamshire Council’s flood-risk data shows more than 18,000 properties are at risk from river, surface-water or groundwater flooding from Austen’s heavy rain, raising the chance of local road closures and property damage.
  • Local authorities, the RNLI and power companies have urged people to secure loose items, prepare for possible power outages and stay away from the coast while road, rail and ferry services warn of delays or cancellations.
  • The Met Office has named a separate low, Storm Boelo, expected to follow over the weekend and bring strong winds and heavy rain to Northern Ireland, Scotland and northern England, extending the spell of disruptive weather.
