Met Office Extends Yellow Rain Warning as Heavy Downpours Threaten Flooding

Forecasters say saturated ground raises flood risk with coastal gusts near 50 mph.

Overview

  • An updated yellow warning now covers parts of the South, the Midlands, the South West and eastern England from 9am until 10pm on Thursday, with some areas covered until 11:59pm.
  • Rainfall of 20–30 mm is expected widely with 40–50 mm possible in a few spots, falling in just a few hours in places and increasing the chance of surface‑water flooding.
  • The Environment Agency has issued flood warnings and alerts, including along the River Severn in Gloucestershire and Worcestershire, as rivers respond to recent and expected rainfall.
  • Travel disruption is likely, with slower road journeys due to spray and flooding, possible bus and rail delays, and coastal winds strengthening to around 50 mph on exposed shores.
  • Looking ahead, forecasters note an increased chance of colder conditions and some snow between roughly 19–28 January, though confidence is low and modelled heavy Scottish totals reported by third‑party charts remain speculative.
