Met Office Extends Snow and Ice Warnings With Amber Alerts in Northern Scotland

Forecasters say further snow is likely Sunday night into Monday, with travel disruption and an England-wide amber cold-health alert in effect.

Overview

  • Amber snow warnings cover parts of northern and eastern Scotland until noon Saturday, with 10–20cm expected on lower ground and up to 30–40cm on higher ground alongside blizzard risk.
  • Yellow snow and ice warnings have been expanded across large areas of England, Wales and Northern Ireland from Sunday afternoon to Monday midday, including Greater Manchester, Merseyside and parts of the Midlands.
  • Accumulations of 1–3cm are forecast widely in yellow zones, with 5–8cm possible in a few inland or higher locations, and forecasters caution that icy patches will be widespread.
  • ScotRail cancelled services and some roads closed in northern Scotland, as officials warn of possible power cuts, stranded vehicles and some rural communities being cut off.
  • Temperatures remain in low single figures by day and well below freezing at night, with the UKHSA’s amber cold-health alert for England running into 9 January and councils deploying gritters and travel safety advice.
