Met Office Extends Snow and Ice Warnings Into Monday, Adding New Alert for Midlands and Wales

Forecasters expect Arctic air to prolong bitter conditions into next week.

Overview

  • Amber snow warnings remain in force for northern and eastern Scotland, with 10–20cm possible at lower levels and 30–40cm on higher ground, alongside a risk of blizzards.
  • A new yellow warning covers parts of Wales and the Midlands from Sunday afternoon to midday Monday, with 1–3cm expected widely and up to 5–8cm in a few spots, and icy patches likely.
  • Snow has already disrupted roads and rail services in northern Scotland, with further risks including power cuts, stranded vehicles and isolated communities highlighted by the Met Office.
  • An amber cold health alert from the UKHSA is active across most of England until 10am on January 9, warning of severe strain on health and social care and higher risks for older and vulnerable people.
  • Daytime temperatures are set to struggle near or below freezing with overnight lows in minus double figures in places, and the Met Office says wintry hazards could continue well into next week.
