Met Office Extends Snow Alerts to Midlands and Wales as Scotland Remains Under Amber Warning

Air and rail travel face delays, with an amber cold‑health alert covering England through next week.

Overview

  • Amber snow warnings continue across northern and eastern Scotland on Saturday, with 10–20cm at low levels, up to 30–40cm on higher ground and a risk of blizzards.
  • A new yellow warning runs from Sunday 3pm to Monday noon for Wales, the West Midlands and parts of northwest and southwest England, forecasting 1–3cm widely and up to 5–8cm in some spots.
  • The Met Office expanded the yellow alert to cover all of Greater Manchester along with Cheshire, Merseyside and most of Lancashire.
  • Transport disruption persisted, including cancellations and diversions at Aberdeen Airport, a Widerøe flight returning to Bergen, and ScotRail cancellations alongside road closures in northern Scotland.
  • Temperatures fell well below freezing in places, the UKHSA’s amber cold‑health alert remains in force across England until 9–10 January, and officials warn of icy surfaces, power‑cut risk and difficult travel.
