Met Office Expands Yellow Wind Warning Across Most of England and Wales

Forecasters expect peak gusts on Monday morning but do not plan to name the system as a storm.

Overview

  • The alert runs from 8pm on Sunday, September 14, to 6pm on Monday, September 15, with the highest risk during Monday morning.
  • Forecast gusts are 45–55 mph inland, 60–70 mph on exposed coasts and hills, and up to 70–80 mph in the most exposed locations.
  • Officials warn of delays on roads, rail, air and ferry services, possible short power cuts, coastal spray and large waves, and a small chance of injuries from flying debris.
  • The warning area was broadened on Friday to include most of England and Wales after updates indicated a wider swath facing yellow-level impacts.
  • People are advised to secure loose outdoor items, check travel plans, and prepare torches, batteries and a phone power pack, with winds expected to ease from the west on Monday afternoon.
